GPS Odometer App: Track Distance and Lifetime Miles

GPS Odometer App: Track Distance and Lifetime Miles

A GPS odometer app turns your phone into a trip meter and odometer for anything that moves. It adds up the distance between satellite position fixes, so wheel size, tyre wear and gearing don’t affect it, and it works on vehicles with no odometer at all. On open roads with a good signal it’s typically within about a percent of the true distance. Save each trip and the app keeps a running lifetime total, which is handy as a second opinion on a car’s odometer, a stand-in for a broken one on an old motorcycle, or a simple log of rides and boat days.

How does a GPS odometer app work? #

The phone takes a position fix about once a second, and the app measures the straight line from each fix to the next and keeps a running total. A stationary phone’s position drifts by a few metres, so a good app filters that noise. Speedometer GPS, for example, ignores movements under 5 metres between fixes (10 metres once you’ve been sitting still), doesn’t use fixes whose accuracy is worse than ±20 metres, and throws out any jump of more than 200 metres, so a parked phone doesn’t rack up phantom miles.

That filter has one cost worth knowing up front. It takes about 18 km/h (11 mph) to cover 5 metres a second, so below that, walking, running, slow cycling, paddling, trolling or crawling traffic, the app’s distance under-counts. It’s built for vehicles at road speeds. On foot, a running app or GPS watch is the right tool.

Distance shows in metres and kilometres, feet and miles, or nautical miles, following whichever speed unit you pick.

How close does it get to a vehicle odometer? #

ConditionsWhat to expect from GPS
Open roads, good fix, normal speedsTypically within about 1% of true distance
Twisty mountain roadsSlightly short, because straight lines between fixes cut the bends
Tunnels and parking garagesDistance missed while there’s no signal
Dense downtownJittery positions; filtering can make it read slightly short
Slow stop-and-go trafficShort, because small steps are filtered out

A vehicle odometer has its own errors. It counts wheel turns, so worn or non-original tyres shift it by a percent or more. Over 1,000 miles, a 1% gap between the two is 10 miles, and neither is necessarily wrong.

Small differences add up over a lifetime total, and they push in predictable directions:

  • GPS tends to run slightly short on twisty roads, and misses tunnels and garages entirely.
  • Odometers tend to run slightly long as tyres wear, and they shift again after any tyre size change.
  • Slow traffic is under-counted by the drift filter that stops a parked phone inventing distance.

If your car and phone disagree, why GPS trip distance doesn’t match your odometer explains which to trust and how to test it.

Setting up on each vehicle #

Car. Mount the phone on the dashboard or windshield where it sees the sky and doesn’t block your view, and check local rules on mounting. Do everything while parked: open the app, wait for a good fix, press Start, then leave it alone. Plug it in for long drives. At night, HUD mode shows a mirrored readout on black that the windshield reflects the right way round.

Bike. Mount it on the stem or bars, where it has open sky; a jersey pocket blocks part of the sky with your body. The dial auto-ranges to a fine 0-60 km/h (0-40 mph) scale at bike speeds. Carry a power bank on long rides, and expect slow climbs to under-count. Bike computer vs GPS distance covers why totals differ from a wheel sensor.

Motorcycle. Use a vibration-damped, weatherproof mount: Apple warns that vibration from high-power motorcycle engines can degrade iPhone cameras. Set everything before you ride. Our motorcycle phone mount guide covers placement and charging.

Boat. Switch to knots and distance shows in nautical miles. Planing speeds count normally; displacement and trolling speeds under-count, as boat trip distance in nautical miles explains.

How does the lifetime total work in Speedometer GPS? #

  1. Press Start before you set off. Live speed shows as soon as the app opens, but trip distance only counts after Start.
  2. Keep the app on screen. It uses location only while it’s open, with no background tracking, and keeps the screen on while tracking by default.
  3. Press Stop before you walk around at a stop, so a stroll round the services isn’t logged as part of the drive.
  4. At the end, press Stop, then Save. The trip is stored with its date, distance, top speed, average speed, trip time, moving time and route.
  5. Press Reset so the next trip starts from zero. Save doesn’t clear the counters, and saving the same running trip twice counts its distance twice; reset vs save walks through the routine.
  6. Open Trips to see the odometer card with total distance, top speed and time across your saved trips, above a list of trips with route thumbnails.

Open any trip for a speed chart and the full route (on Apple Maps on iPhone, as a sketch from your recorded points on Android), and export it as GPX or share a summary card. Everything stays on the phone; nothing is uploaded unless you export or share it.

The limits worth knowing #

  • Up to 100 trips are kept. Saving the 101st drops the oldest, and because the odometer is the sum of the stored trips, the total drops by that trip’s distance.
  • Deleting a trip lowers the total, and clearing trip history in Settings resets it to zero.
  • Routes are trimmed to 500 points per trip to keep storage light. The trip’s distance was counted from every fix before trimming, so the drawing is simplified, not the number.
  • There’s no weekly or monthly report. Add up trips by date for those.
  • Nothing is backed up. Trips live only on this phone and nothing is uploaded, which keeps them private but means they go with the phone. Export anything you want to keep.

How do you keep a total beyond 100 trips? #

  1. Export the trips that matter as GPX. It’s a standard format most mapping and fitness tools open, so your routes stay usable if you change apps.
  2. Keep a simple spreadsheet: date, from, to, distance and a note. Adding a row after each saved trip takes seconds.
  3. Note or screenshot the odometer total at the end of each month. Monthly readings add up to a yearly figure even after old trips roll off.

If you need mileage records for work or taxes, check what your employer or tax authority expects. A GPS log with dates, distances and routes is useful supporting evidence, but many rules also ask for odometer readings and the purpose of each trip; exporting trip distance for tax records covers what to keep. For vehicle servicing, keep using the car’s own odometer, since schedules are written around it.

What can’t a GPS odometer app do? #

  • Log in the background. Speedometer GPS only uses location while it’s open on screen, so it isn’t an automatic mileage tracker that records every drive from your pocket. You start and save trips yourself.
  • Measure slow movement accurately. Walking, running and paddling distances under-count, as above.
  • Replace the legal odometer. Leases, warranties and service schedules go by the vehicle’s odometer.
  • Count distance without a signal. Long tunnels and underground garages leave gaps.

Frequently asked questions #

How accurate are GPS odometer apps? #

On open roads at normal speeds with a good signal, typically within about 1% of the true distance. They read a little short on very twisty roads, in slow traffic and in tunnels. A car’s odometer is often off by a similar or larger amount because of tyre wear.

Can I use my phone as an odometer? #

Yes, on a car, motorcycle, bike or boat. Mount the phone where it can see the sky, start the trip before you move, keep the app open, and save each trip to build a lifetime total.

Does resetting the trip meter erase my total distance? #

No. Reset only clears the trip on screen. The total is the sum of saved trips, so save before you reset, or that trip never makes it into the total.

What happens when I save more than 100 trips? #

The app keeps the newest 100 and drops the oldest, and the total falls by that trip’s distance. Export trips or note the total monthly if you need a longer record.

Does a GPS odometer work without internet? #

Yes. GPS comes from satellites, not the mobile network, so it works in airplane mode, abroad without roaming and offshore. Only maps and ads need data.
